It's made to look like a dagger in its sheath and is made of brass. This one is quite different though as the handle is banded agate. The top of the chain and sheath are decorated with pretty filigree work. It's in excellent condition with no loss or damage and all of it is original (chains, etc.). The little scissors are 2 1/2" long and it measures 5 1/2" from the clip at the top of the chain to the bottom of the sheath. The little scissors blades are tight with sharp points and the metal spring is intact and works well. They cut paper very well. Similar pieces in the more usual style are shown on p. 166 of Cummins & Taunton's book Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance and on p. 116 of Gay Ann Rogers' book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
